Stressed Backwards

It is important to always monitor your energetic well-being, as this will help you to avoid many undesirable issues long before they begin to manifest in your body or your world. Pay close attention to the things that you are craving. Do you find yourself wanting to consume the nightly news? Diet soda? Unhealthy foods such as candy, pizza or chips? Random sexual encounters? Drugs or alcohol? Unusually abrasive music?

These are all signs of a deficiency or excess in one of your energetic systems, and it crying to get your attention in any way that it can. This is both the bane and the boon of the ego/small self’s operation. It will interpret these excesses or deficiencies as a need to “do” something, and put us into a state of seeking external input to sate the need. Keeping in mind that it can only create from what it thinks — which is always the past — it seeks to validate past experiences by drawing to you more of the same. Like always attracts like. Which, in these cases, is a form of self harm.

“I don’t like how I feel. I will find something to bring into myself that validates this feeling, and then I will feel better.”

Of course, this doesn’t work.

The good news is that you can “do” something positive about it, and retrain your ego in the process by giving it new experiences to draw upon. Despite how maligned it can be in many circles, ultimately, it is quite useful and your best friend in many circumstances. Because its goal is always self perpetuation, it can be taught to know that your ultimate well being is also in its own best interest.

When you find these cravings arising, just take note of it and accept that this is a sign that you are under some form of stress. Slow things down, breathe into your belly, and take inventory. Let go of any thoughts that ultimately do not serve your higher purpose and perhaps take mindful action on the quieter ones that you Know are in your best interest. Meditation and quiet are your most valuable allies here. If you find yourself unable, performing simple acts around the house helps. Doing the dishes or changing your bedsheets are both easy ways to put yourself into a healthier mindset… and your ego will listen and learn.

If you must “do,” it is always, always, always, always better to do something that will make you feel better about yourself than to do something that makes you feel good. Remember this.

And please try to meditate when you can. As the saying goes:

“You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes everyday – unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour.” ~Dr. Sukhraj Dhillon
